TAKING SCHOOL SPORTS TO NEW LEVELS
Wed, 11 Aug 2010
Australian cities have been struggling to overcome lack of space as population density rises.
St Laurence’s College in conjunction with GroundAbility (a leading Prograss distributor), and Prograss have come up with a creative and innovative solution. Why not build a field on the top of a car parking facility!
The field is 130m x 68.6m in size, 5 stories high (with Mater Hospital car parking facilities underneath) and has been line marked for running, futsal and soccer. As an added component the school crest has been inlaid into the surface – highly visable from the air.
In the words of Principal Ian McDonald:
‘The idea is to get maximum use of the space and that’s probably why we went for an artificial surface rather than having to grow a grass field – because the wear and tear on grass fields is great. But with the artificial surface you can have a downpour of rain, but then it’s recovered and ready to use within 5-10 min….We looked everywhere to find the best product. We looked at American product and other overseas product and… came back to a product that is actually Australian Made’
Using the latest in sports field technology the synthetic grass surface exceeds the FIFA two star criteria for football fields.
Check out our playfields section under gallery on this website for further pictures of the construction process.
